China's Search Engines

Chinese search engines explained: who searches where

Search in China is not one engine with one audience. Baidu still dominates general search, but Sogou, 360 and Shenma hold meaningful share among specific device and browser populations — and a large share of everyday searching happens inside apps such as WeChat, Douyin, Xiaohongshu and Toutiao, which are not search engines in the Western sense at all.

For a company trying to be found, that means the same audience arrives through very different routes. A post that ranks well in Baidu may be effectively invisible to a Xiaohongshu user. A B2B question answered in Zhihu may never surface in Shenma. Treating any single engine as "search in China" means designing for a minority of the audience without knowing it.

The guides below explain who each engine serves, how its results are composed, where app-internal search fits, and what that implies for where you publish. They are written for teams deciding where to spend effort — not for analysts benchmarking market share.
